How to Help Prevent Ovarian Cancer

All women are at some risk for ovarian cancer and the risks increase with age. The frightening facts are that for the vast majority of cases, no identifiable cause is existing. While there is no way to guarantee you will not get ovarian cancer, there are ways to help prevent it.

Know if you are at risk. There are factors that can increase your risk of having ovarian cancer. If you have these factors it does not mean you will get cancer, but your doctor should be made aware. The factors include:

* If you are middle-aged or older.
* You have given birth or had difficulty getting pregnant.
* Family members have/had ovarian cancer.
* An Eastern European Jewish background.
* If you have had breast, uterine, or colorectal cancer.
* If you have endometriosis.

Be aware that there is no way to prevent ovarian cancer. But the following conditions may reduce your risks:

* Having a baby.
* Using birth control pills (more than five years).
* Have your tubes tied.
* Have your ovaries removed.
* Getting a hysterectomy.

Seek out a gynecologist. Professional advice and instruction is always recommended. There is no easy or reliable test for ovarian cancer in the absence of symptoms or warning signs. However, there are steps you can take in assisting your doctor its prevention:

* Know what is natural for you. Understand your body and how it functions. Advise your doctor of any changes in your body, especially if the changes involve pelvic pain or an unusual vaginal discharge.
* If you are at risk, ask your gynecologist if a rectovaginal pelvic exam, a transvaginal ultrasound, or a CA-125 blood test are in order.

Be aware that Caucasian women are at a higher risk of getting ovarian cancer than any other racial group.
5.

Know that nearly 90 percent of women who get ovarian cancer are over the age of 40.
